Kitchen garden farming ideas: Strategic view
I start this with two questions:
You must Eat what you produce? Or
You must Produce what you eat?
African farmer has been made to believe that eating what they
produce is a better idea than producing what they eat.
Kenya for instance produces a lot of cut flowers, coffee and
tea. West African countries produce a lot of cocoa (chocolate). However, these
countries are the least consumers of what they produce.
On the other hand, African farmers produce what they don’t consume
and import what they consume. Even if the narrative of comparative advantage is
true in this regard, African countries have a huge competitive advantage to
produce the foods that they import.
Consequently, the idea of kitchen garden is gaining
attention from families who wish to grow what they eat. A lot of designs are out there and families can now produce what they eat.
To conclude, self sufficiency in food security starts by producing what you eat!!!
